Julian Bliss, a clarinetist of remarkable versatility, has interpreted concertos, engaged in chamber performances alongside leading musicians, and explored jazz through the Julian Bliss Septet. Additionally, he created the Bliss Clarinet, which is offered through Leblanc, a division of the Conn-Selmer instrument manufacturer.

Born in 1989 in either St. Albans or the neighboring town of Harpenden within England's Hertfordshire, Bliss demonstrated prodigious talent from an early age. Although his family lacked musical inclinations, at the age of four his parents brought him to a music store where he chose the clarinet without hesitation and received a Lyons C clarinet designed specifically for young players. Television appearances came by the time he turned five, followed at six by an invitation to perform at Buckingham Palace, a venue to which he returned in 2002 during the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. He featured in the three-part television documentary Gifted and made an appearance on the U.S. Today Show.

His education commenced at the Purcell School for Young Musicians close to home, after which he attended Indiana University in the United States, having already received an artist's diploma at age twelve upon completing high school. Among his instructors were Paul Harris, Howard Klug, and Sabine Meyer, the latter's mentorship proving especially vital in his development. Winning a prize in the 2001 Concerto Soloists Young Artists Competition held in Philadelphia advanced his professional trajectory, leading to performances with the Orchestre National de Paris, the Seattle Symphony, and numerous prominent British orchestras. Chamber music partnerships have involved numerous prominent figures, among them pianist Hélène Grimaud, violinist Joshua Bell, and cellist Steven Isserlis.

An avid jazz musician as well, Bliss established the Julian Bliss Septet in 2010 to interpret works by Benny Goodman and additional composers; the ensemble has appeared at Wigmore Hall in London, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. He founded Bliss Music in 2020 to release clarinet-and-piano adaptations of classical works.

As the designer of the Bliss Clarinet produced by Conn-Selmer under its Leblanc brand, he serves as the company's clarinet market developer. Crafted from a distinctive composite material, the instrument expands the dynamic range by 20 percent relative to comparable synthetic clarinets and incorporates refinements including right-hand trill keys positioned above areas prone to water condensation within the tone holes.

His discography, extensive in scope, originated in 2004 with the release of Music for clarinet and piano, a recital captured alongside Julien Quentin. Recordings have primarily appeared on EMI and Signum Classics, including a 2021 Signum Classics album of the Brahms Clarinet Sonatas, Op. 120, performed with pianist James Baillieu.
