Julian Siegel

Born in 1966 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, the tenor saxophonist honed his skills on the instrument and in conducting during his student years at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Exposure to jazz arrived through his father’s record collection, which sparked a lasting engagement with the idiom. Living in London from 1991 onward, he quickly earned recognition among listeners, reviewers, and peers. During the 1990s his collaborators included Julian Argüelles, Django Bates, Joey Calderazzo, Kirk Lightsey, and Liam Noble; he also performed in Stan Sulzmann’s big band. Co-leading the Partisans alongside guitarist Phil Robson brought further notice, the quartet—completed by electric bassist Thad Kelly and drummer Gene Calderazzo—earning praise on European tours and at festivals across the continent. Rooted in hard bop yet extending into avant-garde territory, his playing combines invention with the technical command required to realize ambitious ideas, and he doubles capably on bass.
