Biography
Born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Lavender took up piano and classical guitar during childhood. Steel guitar came later, though her development centered chiefly on singing. Elements of pop form the core of her approach, enriched by classical frameworks and jazz inflections. Guests on her second solo album, 2002’s Never Felt The Sun, included flautist Hubert Laws and composer Hugh Martin; the latter, in a rare recorded appearance, played piano on his composition “Here Come The Dreamers” and supplied its arrangement.
Songwriting ranks among Lavender’s key strengths, with material drawn from personal experience that often echoes her childhood surroundings as well as her roles as wife and mother. Consequently her programs combine original pieces with selections from pop, jazz and classical sources. After several years based in Southern California, where she performed in Los Angeles and the San Diego area, she moved to New England in the early 00s.
