Much like Hootie and the Blowfish, the interracial outfit June Rich built a modest yet devoted audience through gigs across Philadelphia during the final years of the 1990s. The group came together in the city in 1996 and quickly earned notice for its melodic pop/rock sound, colored by R&B elements, which stood in contrast to the brooding, angst-driven alternative acts dominating local stages then. Throughout 1997 and 1998 the band stirred growing excitement within the scene and demonstrated an ability to draw full houses at Philadelphia clubs, yet it chose to disband before 1998 concluded. Lead vocalist Vanida Gail launched a solo path the following year.
