Biography
June Star's nostalgic country rock distinguished itself amid the wave of similar releases coinciding with the group's initial album. While much of the roots rock genre embraced a buoyant urgency suited to communal choruses and broad popularity, June Star pursued an alternate perspective on the style. The ensemble merged the Southern gothic motifs associated with Flannery O'Connor alongside the austere methods characteristic of Uncle Tupelo's later phase, resulting in Songs from an Engineer's Daughter as a somber counterpoint within the alternative country landscape. Mandolin player Tom Scanlan, guitarist Tim Johnson, and singer Andrew Grimm formed the core, whose close-knit configuration fostered audience connections via concert appearances. Telegraph emerged two years afterward as a spare and somber effort on Safe House Records. Grimm assembled a revised lineup for the band's 2003 third album Sugarbird, incorporating bassist Ryan Finnerin, percussionist Jeff Trueman, and multi-instrumentalist Tim Bracken.
