Biography
Born on 31 May 1947 in Glasgow, Scotland, William Campbell had already fronted Marmalade when he stepped out as a solo artist in 1972 with the evocative single ‘Hallelujah Freedom’. Retaining much of Marmalade’s melodic character, the soul-infused track climbed into the UK Top 10. Comparable chart success followed the next year with ‘Sweet Illusion’. Once those hits ceased, Campbell redirected his energies into behind-the-scenes production. In the early 1980s he supplied theme music for several award-winning British children’s television series, among them Thomas The Tank Engine, narrated by Ringo Starr, and Tugs; he has continued writing scores for television drama ever since. His solo album received a 2001 reissue that added a bonus disc of rarities and previously unreleased tracks.
