Born Norman Giscombe on 10 November 1961 in England, the singer performed under the streamlined name Junior. Early promise surfaced when his single ‘Mama Used To Say’ climbed into the UK Top 10 and earned a Grammy award. Its successor, ‘Too Late’, proved to be his final UK Top 20 entry. Burdened by the label ‘the future of UK soul’, Giscombe found his career shuttled between Mercury Records, London Records and MCA, none of which could convert positive notices into a sustained breakthrough. A short-lived resurgence arrived in April 1987 via a duet with Kim Wilde on ‘Another Step Closer To You’, which again reached the UK Top 10. In 1986 he joined Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Paul Weller in establishing Red Wedge. Throughout the 90s he released material under the fuller name Junior Giscombe.
