Biography
Taking their unusual moniker from a piece of Japanese adult animation, the multi-instrumentalist siblings Rich Hanscomb and Mik Hanscomb launched Junkboy in 1999. At that time the pair were still rooted in the coastal expanse of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and they made their first recordings for Enraptured Records that same year, issuing the single ‘Ifyoulivedhereyou’dbehomebynow’ alongside the EP Kraut_Hop Ya Don’t Stop! Two years later they moved to the Moshi Moshi Music roster for the full-length The Dynamics Of Modern Communication. Its gently pastoral folk-pop songs, framed by acoustic guitars, jazzy saxophone, layered electronics and discreet vocals, blended with post-rock forms to create an attractive yet ultimately slight impression.
Following a period of inactivity triggered by personal differences, the Hanscombs reactivated Junkboy in 2005 and returned to Enraptured to produce Lost Parade. That second album emerged even more understated than its predecessor, though its performances remained refined and carefully shaped. After the brothers settled in Brighton, East Sussex, they brought in additional musicians for their next project. On the resulting record, Three, the post-rock elements gained greater prominence, giving the material a sharper sense of momentum than the earlier releases had shown.
