Pop underground veterans comprise the Jupiter Affect roster. Bassist and vocalist Michael Quercio originated the phrase “Paisley Underground” in an early-’80s interview to label the many L.A. psychedelic pop outfits tilted toward the ’60s, and he simultaneously anchored that movement through stints in the Salvation Army and the Three O’Clock. After the Three O’Clock disbanded, Quercio entered Permanent Green Light; in 1997 he assembled the Jupiter Affect with PGL drummer Chris Bruckner and guitarists Dan Epstein, late of Lava Sutra, and Jason Shapiro, formerly of Celebrity Skin. Drawing on the members’ shared affinity for ultra-melodic power pop, the band issued its debut, a self-titled EP, via Aerial Flipout in 1998. Instructions for the Two Ways of Becoming Alice reunited Quercio with engineer/producer Earle Mankey, his collaborator from the Three O’Clock and Permanent Green Light, allowing them to deploy their command of classic late-’60s pop and rock production values in full.
