Biography
Katie Ball fronts the Irish five-piece that merges post-rock, shoegaze, and dream pop into a fresh yet ominous sonic identity shifting unpredictably between abrasive textures and weightless atmospheres.
The band originated as a quartet in Dundalk, County Louth, during 2015 after Ball began composing with local friends Rob Clarke on bass and guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyon. Their common admiration for Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and Hans Zimmer prompted the 2016 release of a self-produced, self-titled EP before any permanent drummer had been secured. Shane McGuire completed the rhythm section in early 2017 by joining recording midway through work on their first album.
Wednesday appeared in May 2018 through Pizza Pizza Records, the Dundalk independent label established by Shane Byrne to issue the strongest regional acts on vinyl. An online profile of the record sparked such demand that its limited run of 300 copies sold out rapidly, many acquired by listeners in the United States. Prior to the album’s arrival, Just Mustard had performed almost exclusively near home, but the balance of 2018 brought extensive Irish touring plus their initial English dates.
The year 2019 included a slot at Barcelona’s Primavera Festival and support dates for the Cure. Their May 2019 double-A-side single “Frank”/“October” displayed trip-hop leanings, and after a U.K. tour with Fontaines D.C. they released the single “Seven” that September. By year’s end they had signed with Partisan Records, Fontaines D.C.’s label, though COVID-19 halted plans for an immediate follow-up album.
In August 2020 Pizza Pizza issued a live EP, originally captured for the Part Time Punks broadcast on Los Angeles station KXLU 88.9FM, as a temporary release. Their Partisan debut “I Am You” finally emerged in November 2021 after two years of sessions devoted to refining, testing, and reworking the Just Mustard aesthetic.
Heart Under, released in May 2022, possesses an intimate sonic depth whose production draws listeners inward until they feel embedded within the ensemble. Its promotional itinerary covered numerous European cities before the band accompanied Fontaines D.C. on an extended U.S. run.
