Biography
Among Angolan ensembles, the Kafala Brothers rank among the rare few to register on the World Music circuit. Their graceful yet mournful ballads owe much to the acoustic guitar approach of Portugal, the former colonial power, while the vocal lines unfold in Portuguese as readily as in the regional languages Kimbundo and Umbundo. Even so, the Kafala Brothers also turn to brisker material shaped by the dance rhythms of kilapango and nhatcho. European stages hosted them on tours mounted in 1988 and 1990.
