Born in Taiwan, Kaila Yu arrived in the United States as a toddler. Early on she studied music, dance, and Chinese language and culture, then enrolled at the University of California, San Diego with the initial plan of majoring in biology. She ultimately moved to UCLA, completed an economics degree, and had in fact relocated to Los Angeles chiefly to chase opportunities in modeling, acting, and singing. Those ambitions materialized rapidly through internet modeling and the 2003 release of her album Kaila. Three years afterward she appeared in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. The visibility she gained, aided by her MySpace page, produced coverage in Rolling Stone and Stuff Magazine; in 2007 she co-founded Nylon Pink together with designer and stylist Kitt.E.Katt.
