Biography
Assembled expressly for the purpose of capturing Singa, the ensemble supported the worldwide debut of Idrissa Magassa, born 15 August 1952 in Kougel, Senegal, whose vocals had previously appeared with Super Djata Band. Recording for the project occurred across Senegal, the UK, France and the Netherlands, drawing in Zoumana Diarra, born 1960 in Tominian, Mali, on guitar, together with Abdramane ‘Djigui’ Fall, born 29 July 1959 in Bamako, Mali, whose contributions covered percussion and production after his earlier tenure in Super Djata Band. Issued in 1996, Singa incorporated saxophone, trumpet, balafon and keyboards, resulting in a notably restrained and roots-oriented sound that stood apart from the heavily electronic productions typical of West African artists then living in Europe. Magassa, Diarra and Fall maintain an ongoing affiliation with Benkadi International.
