Kalan Porter came into the world in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, during November 1985. National recognition arrived when he captured the top prize on the second season of the reality talent competition Canadian Idol in 2004. His performances on the program featured a conventional rock repertoire that encompassed Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild," the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," and U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The win triggered the release of the single "Awake in a Dream," which earned multi-platinum certification. Porter's debut album, 219 Days, appeared in November 2004 and likewise reached multi-platinum status. A period of touring followed, along with Juno Awards nominations, after which he elected to step away temporarily to address family concerns. He resurfaced in 2007 with the full-length Wake Up Living, issued that August.
