Biography
Britain's Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective operates as a fluid group of performers whose core mission centers on honoring diversity across every dimension. Several leading figures from the British music scene have shown strong interest in the ensemble and taken part in its projects. Multiple recordings by the group have appeared on the Chandos label, among them the 2024 release Brahms & Contemporaries, Vol. 1, which highlights compositions by Luise Adolpha Le Beau.
Tom Poster, active as both composer and pianist, joined violinist Elena Urioste to establish the Collective in 2017. Poster continues to receive commissions from artists such as trumpeter Alison Balsom, while Urioste, who trained through the Sphinx Organization, performs with the Chineke! Orchestra and runs yoga retreats designed specifically for musicians. The two have expressed their conviction that "chamber music has an extraordinary power to bring people together: it unites musicians as equals, allowing them to learn from and be inspired by each other, and draws listeners in to its intimate, transportive world." Through its programs the Collective presents chamber works that regularly feature Poster and Urioste, frequently joined by additional performers who share the same artistic goals. Among those who have appeared or are scheduled to appear are Balsom, violinist Nicola Benedetti, baritone Roderick Williams, and several members of the Kanneh-Mason family.
By autumn 2017 the ensemble was already giving regular concerts, one of which took place at London's St. John's Smith Square. Residencies followed at the Kirker Ischia Music Festival in Italy during 2018, the Cheltenham Music Festival in Britain in 2019, and Wigmore Hall at the start of 2020; into the mid-2020s the group has held the status of associate ensemble at Wigmore Hall. Performances continued throughout the coronavirus pandemic via both online platforms and occasional live events, including a BBC Radio 3 In Tune Christmas Special that featured music by Reynaldo Hahn and Florence Price. Many of the Collective's programs deliberately incorporate works by women and by nonwhite composers.
The first album, American Quintets, appeared in 2021 and presented music by Amy Beach, Samuel Barber, and Price; Poster and Urioste were joined by violinist Melissa White, violist Rosalind Ventris, cellist Laura van der Heijden, and bassist Matthew Rose. Subsequent releases in 2022 focused on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor as well as Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, while soprano Francesca Chiejina was featured on the 2023 album Transfigured. In 2024 the ensemble launched an ongoing series exploring Brahms and his contemporaries, several of them women, beginning with Brahms & Contemporaries, Vol. 1.
