In 1976 an expansive UK disco and soul ensemble took shape, its members drawn from the earlier groups Hot Wax (later renamed Hi Tension) and 70% Proof. Mickie Most signed them to his RAK Records imprint and produced their sessions. Their opening release, the single ‘Don’t Wanna Say Goodnight’, registered only modest chart impact in 1978, yet three further singles followed, one of them the 1979 number-11 entry ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose You’. The lineup comprised Teeroy on vocals and keyboards, Ferdi on bass, Alex Bruce on percussion, St Lloyd Phillips on drums and vocals, Tamby on guitar and vocals, Phil Fearon on guitar, and Bob Collins on percussion and vocals. After Kandidate disbanded, only Fearon continued to reach the charts; he erected his own studio and scored a run of mid-1980s hits both under his own name and with the act Galaxy.
