Emerging from the Northern California folk milieu that gave rise to the late Kate Wolf, folk-blues singer/songwriter Karen Almquist works alongside many of that artist’s former collaborators. Wolf’s longtime musical partner Nina Gerber handled production duties on Almquist’s first record, the 1996 release Tracking of Time. Almquist’s style features a more grounded tone and robust vocal delivery compared to Wolf’s thinner approach, drawing primary inspiration from the raw, early blues recordings of Bonnie Raitt. In the manner of Raitt, she excels as both a vocalist and an adept practitioner of bottleneck slide guitar. Almquist has maintained an active presence on the club scene across Northern California and Oregon, in addition to appearances at folk festivals throughout the country, following the launch of Tracking of Time.
