Detroit native Karen Newman has maintained a prominent presence across Michigan for years, most visibly as the regular “Voice of the Detroit Red Wings.” The sultry vocalist began performing in high-school musicals before joining a lounge band that specialized in Top 40 material. Once that ensemble disbanded, she accumulated extensive studio experience, sang aboard cruise ships, recorded jingles, played nightclub engagements, and secured multiple victories on Ed McMahon’s “Star Search.” Those credits led to tours as a backup vocalist for Bob Seger, on-camera spots in television commercials for Detroit radio station WRIF, and a performance of the “Star Spangled Banner” at a high-profile tennis tournament. Brief appearances singing the national anthem at Detroit Pistons basketball games and Red Wings hockey games prompted the team to offer her the role of performing the anthem before every home contest, a position she has held for the better part of a decade. The resulting visibility enabled her to issue the classic-rock-oriented pop album Moment in the Wind and the holiday collection What Christmas Means to Me.
