Biography
Karma County operated well before prevailing tastes caught up with their approach. During the mid-1990s, Australian audiences remained fixated on American alternative rock and its local imitators such as Silverchair and the Superjesus. Roughly a decade afterward, when the John Butler Trio proved capable of reaching number one, acoustic roots music dominated the charts, yet the band distinguished itself by weaving Eastern instruments into country twang and Americana leanings. The group came together in 1995 as a minimal acoustic trio performing in Sydney’s inner-city pubs, with Brendan Gallagher handling guitar and vocals while also producing their recordings, Michael Galeazzi on double bass, and Stuart Eadie on snare drum in addition to creating all visual elements. As live work expanded beyond those venues, additional musicians joined, among them Bruce Reid on lap steel and guitar, Lachlan Doley on keyboards, and Cameron Bruce on keyboards and backing vocals. Two albums appeared on the short-lived independent imprint TWA Records—Last Stop Heavenly Heights in 1997 and Olana in 1998—before the band secured a contract through Melody Management and Universal for the 1999 release Into the Land of Promise. Olana had already earned an ARIA Award nomination in the Best Independent Album category, while Into the Land of Promise secured both a nomination and the win for Best Adult Contemporary Album.
The 2001 album Happy Birthday Dear Customer incorporated a horn section along with strings from the Fourplay String Quartet. Its title originated during a Toronto tour stop at a Japanese restaurant, where staff presented a cake for Stuart Eadie’s birthday yet sang the standard greeting without using his name. Although an EP was initially planned as a follow-up, sufficient new material emerged to fill another full-length record, resulting in Pacifico in 2004. Actor Bryan Brown supplied a spoken-word segment for the track “Dexter & Sinistra.” In 2008 the band issued the double album Headland, which gathered hits, rarities, and several newly recorded songs.
