Biography
Hailing from Vancouver in British Columbia, singer-songwriter Katherine Penfold stands out as an emotive performer whose breezy pop sound draws on jazz and blues. She entered the world in Nova Scotia before growing up in Manitoba, where her listening centered on Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and the Celtic folk of Natalie MacMaster along with the Rankin Family. Near the age of 14 she took up singing and piano, soon appearing in local Manitoba coffeehouses. After finishing high school she sharpened her craft by studying jazz at Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba. Inspiration from Joss Stone, Norah Jones, and Amy Winehouse steered her toward a pop-focused career. In 2008 she received the Project Cool Songwriters Award, whose proceeds underwrote her debut album, Journals, released in 2009. That same year she issued the concert recording Katherine Penfold Live at the Park. Her sophomore studio album, Love, followed in 2013 and featured the singles “Lullabies” and “Love Too.” In 2017 she brought out the holiday-themed album Keep Christmas with You.
