Biography
Kavita Krishnamurthy, whose name is occasionally rendered Krishnamurti according to differing Anglicized spellings, rose rapidly during the 1980s and most dramatically in the 1990s to become one of the Indian film industry's most adaptable and skilled female vocalists. She moved with equal assurance between tender romantic numbers and lighter commercial melodies on one side and more intricate, sophisticated material on the other; that command of demanding repertoire ultimately led to both a musical and personal alliance with violin virtuoso L. Subramaniam as the decade closed.
Born Sharda Krishnamurthy in Delhi, she grew up in a household steeped in the arts: her father served in the Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry while her mother, an enthusiast of classical Indian music and dance, arranged early training for her daughter. Although Carnatic instruction would have been geographically logical, the absence of accomplished local teachers prompted Kavita to begin with Hindustani classical studies instead. Time spent with her Bengali aunt and uncle, whom she came to regard almost as additional parents, also steered her toward Rabindra Sangeet.
Still a youngster in 1971, she recorded her debut film song, a Bengali duet alongside the legendary Lata Mangeshkar under the baton of singer-composer Hemant Kumar. Relocating to Mumbai with her aunt to pursue higher education, where she earned an economics degree, she simultaneously sought entry into playback singing. On campus she encountered Ranu Mukherjee, Hemant Kumar's daughter, who reconnected her with the composer; he soon featured Krishnamurthy in live settings and introduced her to music director Manna Dey, while commercial jingles provided further early work. Through family connections, notably a close friend who was the mother of actress Hema Malini, she met composer Laxmikant of the dominant Laxmikant-Pyarelal team in late 1976. Recognizing her ability, Laxmikant hired her to record scratch vocals for songs destined for established stars such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.
The first track to reach the screen under her own name was "Kaahe Ko Byaahi" in 1980, yet widespread recognition arrived only in 1985 with the major success "Tumse Milkar Na Jaane Kyon." That breakthrough expanded her opportunities beyond the Laxmikant-Pyarelal circle, allowing collaborations with additional composers and television assignments even as she maintained ties to her original supporters, who supplied the bulk of her 1980s hits. Among these were the widely popular "Hawa Hawai" and Anu Malik's "Julie Julie."
As the Laxmikant-Pyarelal partnership gradually waned in the early 1990s, Krishnamurthy's established standing ensured continued demand from other directors and music creators. The year 1994 marked a decisive turning point: R.D. Burman mounted a striking return with 1942: A Love Story, entrusting its entire soundtrack to her voice alone, while Viju Shah captured the chart-topping duet "Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast" for Mohra. Once the releases circulated, she stood among the foremost contemporary female playback artists, securing multiple major successes from the 1942 soundtrack, among them "Kyon Naye Lag Rahe" and "Rimjhim Rimjhim," together with several honors including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Pyaar Hua Chupke Se."
Throughout the remainder of the decade she recorded with leading figures such as Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, A.R. Rahman, and Nadeem-Shravan. Her Filmfare streak reached three consecutive wins in 1995 and 1996 for "Mera Piya Ghar" from Yaraana and "Aaj Main Upar" from Khamoshi. Fresh hits continued to appear, and many listeners found the artistic level of her performances at a sustained peak. In 1999, L. Subramaniam invited her to contribute vocals to the Global Fusion project, valuing her range for an ambitious fusion of Asian and Western traditions; mutual artistic respect soon extended into private life, leading to their marriage shortly afterward. She thereafter divided her schedule among further joint work with the occasionally U.S.-based Subramaniam, ongoing Bombay film assignments, and her primary residence in Bangalore.
