Born May 1, 1977, in Fort Worth, Texas, Keite Young entered a household steeped in music as a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. His grandfather performed blues under the name Big Daddy Young, while his parents, Carrie and Dalon Collins, contributed vocals on tours with Kirk Franklin & the Family. Young began composing songs at age eight yet waited until his late teens before he started to sing, by which point he had already become an ordained preacher. He mastered keyboards, drums, and guitar through self-instruction and devoted his free hours to crafting home demos that acquainted him with studio techniques. He also performed and traveled with the Family, delivering the lead on “Let My People Go” for Franklin’s segment of the 1998 Prince of Egypt soundtrack.

Dalon Collins forwarded one of those demos to Wayman Tisdale, Young’s great uncle, who quickly detected the singer’s range—from raspy tenor to sexy, high falsetto—and offered a production agreement. Tisdale next shared the recordings with Steve McKeever, president of Hidden Beach Records, who likewise recognized the talent and added Young to the label roster. Young’s first full-length project, The Rise and Fall of Keite Young, reached stores via Hidden Beach in 2007, revealing an adaptable blend that wove soul, funk, R&B, and gospel elements into an engaging modern neo-soul mixture.
