Keith LeBlanc functioned as far more than the percussionist behind the apocalyptic dub and funk textures shaped by Adrian Sherwood through On-U Sound. He also built a notable body of solo work that drew on the dense sonic collages and layered textures he had absorbed during his time in the Sherwood-produced group Tackhead. Although Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald—the remaining members of Tackhead, who had earlier formed part of Sylvia Robinson’s Sugarhill studio band—along with Sherwood himself supplied considerable input, the releases issued under LeBlanc’s own name still stood out as bold, experimental pieces of postmodern music. These works wove live instrumentation together with musique concrete techniques, spoken-word passages, and audio fragments lifted from film and television broadcasts. Far from easy listening, they challenged listeners at every turn. LeBlanc launched his recording career with the EP No Sell Out, a hip-hop reworking of a Malcolm X speech that registered as an “hit” on the alternative scene and generated momentum for his debut full-length album, Major Malfunction. The title referenced the phrase engineers applied to the Challenger space shuttle disaster, and LeBlanc incorporated actual taped reports from that event into the record. Despite modest commercial returns, Major Malfunction was succeeded by Stranger Than Fiction, a follow-up that proved somewhat disappointing yet retained enough abrasive noise and reggae-tinged unease to remain compelling. Keith LeBlanc died on April 4, 2024, at the age of 70.
