Among the foundational figures of contemporary electronic dance music—Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, David Mancuso, Grooverider, and Kool Herc—Ken Collier earns equal recognition. During the closing years of the 1970s, he motivated young people in Detroit, including future techno pioneers Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Mike Grant, to take up DJing. His establishment of True Disco Productions in 1977 led to the opening of Chessmate, Detroit's inaugural major dance venue, where he performed prior to securing the residency at the renowned Studio 54 Detroit in the Motor City during 1979. Throughout the middle of the 1980s, he maintained his status as the most prominent DJ in the city through performances at the iconic Heaven club, before his protégés, such as the driven Jeff Mills and Derrick May, surpassed him. Despite fading from Detroit's historical narratives, where Electrifying Mojo often takes his place despite comparable impact, Collier persisted with his sets into the mid-1990s up to his death.
