Biography
British singer Kenny Bernard belonged to the select roster of soul artists on Pye Records throughout the mid-1960s. His recording career opened in 1965 with the single “The Tracker,” supported by the Wranglers; that track and the later B-side “Hey Woman” later surfaced on various U.K. freakbeat anthologies. Over the next few years he delivered six polished soul singles to British listeners—four issued by Pye, followed by two more on British CBS between 1967 and 1968, the final one containing his version of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Although none of these sides reached the U.K. charts, Northern soul collectors later championed Bernard’s Pye 45s, elevating the original pressings to prized rarities. No full-length album ever appeared under his name, and his singles have yet to be gathered in a single collection, even though the combined output on both labels would fill a twelve-track CD.
