Biography
Kenneth Broberg, a pianist who has collected medals from major international events including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia, appears on the Steinway & Sons artist roster.
Born Kenneth Broberg in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 2, 1993, he has performed professionally as Kenny. An Italian-American grandfather’s enthusiasm for The Three Tenors first drew him toward classical music, prompting piano study at age six with Joseph Zins in St. Paul, Minnesota. In high school he competed in baseball and hockey, interests he still follows, at times streaming games from backstage at concert halls. Broberg completed undergraduate work at the University of Houston under Nancy Weems, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 2016 after claiming the school’s concerto competition in 2012. He next entered the master’s program at Park University in Missouri, training with Stanislav Ioudenitch, the former Van Cliburn Piano Competition gold medalist.
Further prizes accumulated in the United States and abroad, culminating in the silver medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017. Decca Gold released recordings of those Cliburn performances that year as his debut album. Broberg followed with a bronze medal at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia and captured the American Pianists Association award in 2021.
He has performed with orchestras throughout the United States and overseas, appearing with the Sydney Symphony in Australia and the Royal Philharmonic in England under conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, Vasily Petrenko, and Kent Nagano. National Public Radio has broadcast his original composition Barcarolle, and he has also been heard on WQXR in New York and Australia’s ABC radio network. The American Pianists Association Award included a Steinway & Sons recording contract that yielded a 2023 album of sonatas by Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Nikolay Medtner. Broberg serves as deputy professor at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain.
