Kenny Kirkland maintained periodic ties to Wynton and Branford Marsalis yet released just a single album under his own name before an untimely passing. Piano lessons began for him at six, followed by formal training at the Manhattan School of Music. Early employment included a 1977 stint on electric keyboards alongside Michal Urbaniak, a 1979 engagement with Miroslav Vitous, plus work with Terumasa Hino and Elvin Jones. Shaped by Herbie Hancock’s approach, Kirkland received prominent exposure during his 1981–1985 tenure in Wynton Marsalis’ ensemble, though his 1985 exit—taken with Branford Marsalis to perform pop material alongside Sting—deeply displeased Wynton. Once free of Sting in 1986, Kirkland turned to studio work and, during the early 1990s, entered the Tonight Show band led by Branford Marsalis; his sole leader date appeared on GRP in 1991. On November 13, 1998, Kirkland was discovered deceased at age 43 inside his Queens, NY, residence.
