A Texas guitarist might typically evoke images of a country renegade, a Tex-Mex dynamo, or an unhinged rock eccentric, yet exceptions always surface. Ft. Worth-born Kevin McCormick charts his own course alongside figures such as Davíd Garza and Charalambides. Blending intensely personal rock, formal musical training, and global performing traditions, he fuses these elements into striking, intricate compositions marked by rich and unforeseen arrangements.

McCormick took up both guitar and general classical lessons before reaching ten. His listening spanned composers including Arvo Pärt—who prompted a prize-winning poem written in 1990—and bands such as Talk Talk and Echo & the Bunnymen. Academic pursuits yielded a degree in English Literature from Notre Dame alongside classical guitar study at the Centro Romano Della Chitarra. The early ’90s brought a four-year residence in Japan, where he explored the koto, joined multiple ensembles, and issued his debut album, With the Coming of Evening, in 1993. Additional training at the Indiana University School of Music earned him a diploma in guitar performance in 1997, followed by the 1999 release Squall. His other works range from solo guitar pieces to a full church mass.

In 2000 McCormick assembled the Kevin McCormick Ensemble to present his existing and new material in concert settings.
