The musical settings evoked by singer/songwriter Kevin Montgomery through his high lonesome voice and heartfelt lyrics prominently feature Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles. As the offspring of Buddy Holly’s musical partner and Elvis Presley’s backup singer, Montgomery inherited an unavoidable musical destiny. Nashville upbringing during his formative years anchored his work in a rootsy Americana sound, while street performances in subways layered in New York’s sly, street-smart sensibilities. The expansive, sunlit skies of Los Angeles supplied an additional layer of optimism and melodicism that recalls Jackson Browne.

Fear Nothing, his 1993 debut on A&M Records, introduced a promising young artist whose evident potential translated into opening slots for labelmate Sheryl Crow and David Crosby, plus limited Triple-A radio exposure. After leaving A&M, Montgomery spent several years moving between projects and secured placements on multiple compilations, among them the Buddy Holly tribute Not Fade Away, where he shared a duet with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Further collaborations involved Lee Ann Womack, Cindy Alexander, Rodney Crowell, and Anna Wilson, while Martina McBride and Juice Newton both recorded his material. Another Long Story surfaced in 2000 throughout the U.K. and Europe; this collection of his strongest songs to that point reached Paul McCartney, who invited Montgomery to perform at the former Beatle’s annual Buddy Holly birthday event in London. Overseas demand has been confirmed by repeated television appearances and sold-out concerts on every visit. Montgomery documented the intimate atmosphere of his European acoustic shows with Kevin Montgomery Live, recorded at Nashville’s Bluebird Café in 2001. Also issued that year, the EP Paint contains a duet with Trisha Yearwood on the aptly titled “Tennessee Girl,” which the BBC selected to open its CMA Awards broadcast.
