Biography
K.I.A. operates under the alternate identity Shinjuku Zulu, an artist whose music and its delivery both reject conventional paths. Born Kirby Andersen, this Canadian producer launched his career in Calgary after earning an English literature degree from the local university in 1988. An impulse for exploration next led him to Tokyo, where Japanese culture and its striking contrasts—ancient temples set against a rapidly advancing technological landscape—supplied deep creative fuel. North America eventually drew him back, and he settled in Toronto after passing through Los Angeles. There he assembled his first album, Shinjuku Zulu (2000), issued on his newly founded Neuphoria Recordings imprint under the identical alias. The record blended an array of electronica and world-music styles, interleaving them not merely across the full sequence but inside individual tracks as well. Numerous guest vocalists further heightened the album’s diversity, earning strong approval from Canadian critics. For the follow-up, Adieu, Shinjuku Zulu (2002), the producer adopted the K.I.A. name.
