Kila, a Celtic pop ensemble, originated in Dublin in 1987 when vocalist and bodhrán player Rónán Ó Snodaigh joined forces with his multi-instrumentalist brother Rossa and uilleann piper Eoin Dillon. Fellow students soon brought flutist Colm, another Ó Snodaigh sibling, into the group, prompting street performances across the Dublin area; various musicians rotated through the lineup until fiddler Dee Armstrong, guitarist Lance Hogan, and bassist Brian Hogan, Lance’s brother, completed the stable roster. Mind the Gap served as the debut release, after which the band issued Tóg É Go Bog É in 1998. Lemonade & Buns appeared two years afterward. In 2001 the members put out Monkey!, an album of material written for a stage musical drawn from a 16th century Chinese folk tale. Luna Park followed in 2003, Live in Dublin in 2004, and the EP Tiománaí in 2005.
