Kim Jordan, raised amid gospel traditions as the child of a preacher, frequently performed and sang the music during her early years in Detroit. Upon departing for Howard University, she deliberately avoided music coursework in favor of other pursuits. An encounter with jazz reignited her keyboard playing, which soon attracted the attention of revolutionary Gil Scott-Heron. She spent the following twelve years traveling globally as a member of his group. Outside those tours, session contributions for Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Williams, Take 6, Lionel Hampton, and additional artists occupied her time. A car accident ended these endeavors by rendering keyboard performance impossible. She withdrew from her circle of friends and relatives after relocating to Stockholm, Sweden. There she reconnected with her origins through studies toward ordination as a Minister of the Gospel. She also returned to gospel music and set out to develop the hybrid she called “gospel-jazz.” The style received its first exposure on the 2001 album All for You. She composed the soundtrack for the Showtime cable network 2002 film Rain prior to issuing her second album, Full Circle, in 2006.
