Biography
Kim Wilburn, who records as Kim Joyce, channels raw emotion into her work as a vocalist, composer, and studio architect whose output resists tidy labels. Material she has issued independently ranges across acoustic ballads and unadorned contemporary R&B slow jams, nodding to late-'90s touchstones such as Lauryn Hill and the signature productions of Timbaland and Missy Elliott. Her earliest performances took place as a child inside her father's Detroit church, yet basketball defined her focus through early adulthood. At The Ohio State University she suited up for all four seasons and earned Big Ten Conference defensive player of the year honors once. While closing in on the Buckeye squad's career steals mark and completing an economics degree, she also sang with the band La Quest. A solo trajectory began once La Quest disbanded in 2006. Initial offerings included the Kimberly Joyce EP, the 2010 album Eleven, and assorted mixtapes. Following the 2015 EP Unstoppable, she moved closer to her second full-length project through singles such as "We the People" and "Oh Why."
