Biography
The origins of King of Spain trace back to 2007, when Tampa, Florida songwriter Matt Slate, previously active in groups such as Pohgoh, established the project as a solo outlet. Performing solely with guitar and laptop accompaniment, Slate finished his debut album Entropy in 2008. The record stood out as a deeply personal work, blending ambient soundscapes with Brian Wilson-esque harmonies voiced through Slate’s husky multitracked delivery. Expansion followed in 2009, when the lineup grew into a duo after Daniel Wainright joined on bass and an array of additional instruments. Their next appearance came with the 2012 sophomore release All I Did Was Tell Them te Truth and They Thought It Was Hell. Partially supported by online pledges from fans, this elaborately named album moved into the darker reaches of the pop ambient pop spectrum.
