Kitty Snyder launched her musical path as a member of Loveapple, the ensemble assembled by her fellow students at Fredonia State University in Fredonia, New York. The warmth of her voice emerged as a standout feature in the group and soon generated outside interest, among them an invitation to audition for 10,000 Maniacs after Natalie Merchant’s exit; Snyder ultimately skipped the tryout owing to scheduling clashes and travel complications. Although she persuaded the others to relocate to Athens, Georgia, in 1997, deepening artistic rifts soon surfaced, with Snyder favoring a folk direction while Loveapple inclined toward denser indie-rock arrangements. She turned to solo appearances in 1998 and recorded a self-produced cassette of original material that same year. An acoustic performance shared with Cracker drew the attention of David Lowery, who placed her on the Pitch-a-Tent Records roster and issued her debut solo album, Celebrate, in 1999.
