Biography
Kiya Heartwood first entered the recording world with the cassette Gravity, issued in 1983 after her birth in Middletown, Kentucky, USA. She later joined Stealin Horses, whose self-titled album appeared on Arista Records in 1988 and whose follow-up, Mesa And Mandolins, arrived in 1991; the group dissolved the next year. An attempt at a solo album recorded at Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama proved uninspiring. In 1993 the R&B label Malaco Records established a country subsidiary and selected the singer-songwriter as its initial signing. Heartwood then teamed with Miriam Davidson (b. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; vocals, accordion, guitar, banjo, percussion) to form the folk roots duo Wishing Chair in 1995. On Terrakin Records the pair issued Singing With Red Wolves in 1995, Undisputed Country in 1998, The Ghost Of Will Harbut in 2000, Crow in 2002, Dishpan Brigade in 2003 with Kara Barnard, and Underdog in 2005.
