K'Jon's first radio exposure arrived in Detroit during 2001, when a pair of local R&B stations began spinning his single "My Shorty." That regional breakthrough earned the laid-back, Latin-flavored track "Miami" a spot on the soundtrack for the 2003 film 2 Fast 2 Furious. Around the same period he contributed songwriting to several Disturbing tha Peace artists, most notably co-writing three songs for Shareefa that appeared on her 2006 album Point of No Return. He simultaneously strengthened his solo profile; "Yes Sir" renewed his Detroit airplay momentum and paved the way for the independent debut This Is Me, issued at roughly the same moment as Shareefa's project. Another self-released set, The Ballroom Xplosion, followed in 2007 and contained "On the Ocean," his strongest showing to date and the catalyst for a Universal Republic contract. The song received a national release in 2009, reaching number 12 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart while appearing on I Get Around. A subsequent Universal Republic single, "Good Morning," issued in 2011, failed to enter the same chart's Top 70, and the planned album Oxygen endured multiple delays before being abandoned. K'Jon then moved to Shanachie, which issued Moving On in April 2012.
