Having already secured her standing in indie pop history through membership in standout groups like the Softies and Tiger Trap plus further outfits such as Gaze, Go Sailor, and Brave Irene, Rose Melberg also issued multiple strong solo albums before forming Knife Pleats in 2014. A span of several years without band activity left her holding a stock of prepped uptempo material when the new project began. She enlisted Kaity McWhinney and Tracey Vath from Vancouver band Love Cuts along with drummer Gregor Phillips, after which the quartet moved into rehearsals and area performances. Sessions followed in April and May of 2015, guided by David Carswell at JC/DC and at Phillips' home. The finished result, Hat Bark Beach, delivered a brisk twenty-seven-minute burst of noisy yet melodic pop. Late 2015 saw its release on Lost Sound Tapes in North America as both LP and cassette, on WIAIWYA for the U.K. LP, and on Jigsaw Records for the CD.
