Originating from Japan, the ensemble Kodo has risen to worldwide acclaim while maintaining its base on Sado Island, where its fresh approach to semi-traditional taiko drumming has enthralled audiences across the globe. Established in 1981, the name Kodo carries a twofold significance, denoting both “heartbeat -- the primal source of all rhythm” and “children of the drum,” an expression of the group’s wish to perform with the innocence and directness of a child’s heart. One-third of each year is devoted to engagements throughout Japan, another third to performances on foreign soil, and the final third to disciplined training routines conducted in their Sado village. The musicians have appeared on every continent except Antarctica, promoting cross-cultural harmony through the universal language of rhythm. In addition to conventional taiko concerts, their work includes a partnership with synthesizer pioneer Isao Tomita on Nasca Fantasy, coaching members of the wide-ranging Cirque du Soleil in taiko techniques, creating the soundtrack for The Hunted, and organizing the annual “Earth Celebration” festival on Sado that draws percussionists from many nations. As emissaries of peace through music, they stand today as the leading exponents of the living tradition of taiko drumming.
