Biography
Sophisticated, cerebral, and psychedelic, the indie rock creations of the confident, velvety-voiced koleżanka first surfaced toward the end of the 2010s. Rooted in perception and consciousness, her initial full-length effort, Place Is, surfaced in 2021. Months of seclusion shaped the comparable successor, Alone with the Sound the Mind Makes, which appeared in 2023.
Kristina Moore spent much of her life making music after growing up in a ranching community in West Phoenix, Arizona, where her grandfather operated a polka club. Although brief, her piano instruction gave way to the expansive experience of performing in her neighborhood Catholic Church choir. During high school she joined both theater productions and her earliest band, then relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, following graduation. There she focused on composing material, performing at intimate spots, and arranging her initial D.I.Y. tours before heading back to Phoenix roughly a year later. Eventually she reached the East Coast by signing on as touring keyboardist and backing vocalist for the New York-based indie group Triathalon, choosing to remain in the city once that period concluded.
Moore launched her own recordings in 2016 under the alias koleżanka—a Polish term for “colleague”—as a tribute to solidarity among women within a male-dominated music scene. Crafted across two years and captured remotely alongside longtime partner Ark Calkins, her first album, Place Is, came out via Bar/None in 2021. A meditation on solitude during the winter spanning late 2020 and early 2021, the follow-up, Alone with the Sound the Mind Makes, was ultimately tracked at Pulp Arts in Gainesville, Florida, and shaped in tandem with Calkins before emerging on Bar/None in early 2023.
