Kollektiv emerged from Germany during the early 1970s with an inventive fusion of jazz and rock. Their lone, self-titled album is frequently likened to the earliest work by Kraftwerk and Organisation, whose shared history with the group stretches back to the late 1960s.

The band’s story originates in the mid-1960s, when twin brothers Jogi and Waldemar Karpenkiel joined forces with Jurgen Havix to create the pop-oriented trio The Generals. After the ensemble dissolved, each musician pursued separate projects. Jogi Karpenkiel joined the Phantoms, later renamed Bluesology, a lineup that included future Kraftwerk co-leader Ralf Hutter and jazz saxophonist Klaus Dapper. In 1968 Jogi exited Bluesology—by then evolving into the proto-Kraftwerk unit Organisation—and reunited with Waldemar and Havix in The Generals. Tired of beat-driven material, the musicians shifted toward the sounds of early Zappa and King Crimson alongside jazz, persuading Dapper to participate. By 1970 the quartet had adopted the name Kollektiv and placed greater weight on experimentation and improvisation. In 1971, preparing for their debut concert 250 miles distant, they acquired a used VW bus the day before departure. Over the following years the group performed regularly at nightclubs and festivals across Germany.

March 1973 found Kollektiv in Hamburg laying down their self-titled album for legendary engineer Conny Plank; the LP appeared on the Brain label. Several months afterward, additional recordings were captured and broadcast from Sudwestfunk Radio Studio. Two years later Jogi Karpenkiel departed to spend several years with Guru Guru, while Havix launched a solo career. Guitarist Jochen Schrumpf and bassist Detlef Wiederhoft stepped in, yet the band continued only until its 1978 dissolution.

In 1987 Waldemar Karpenkiel, Dapper, and Schrumpf revived the project, bringing in famed Swedish bassist Jonas Hellborg and keyboardist Thomas Bettermann. The following year they issued the album Kollektiv Featuring Jonas Hellborg, after which the group has remained largely inactive.
