Biography
Hailing from Brighton, Kovak craft infectious new wave and dance-pop tracks in the vein of the 1980s, drawing from influences like Blondie, Eurythmics, and Madonna. The band originated in Brighton circa 2009 and navigated multiple personnel shifts prior to stabilizing around the trio consisting of vocalist Annelies Van de Velde, who was born in Belgium, along with guitarist Karl Bray and drummer Darren Bray. Following their initial album release titled Heroes & High Heels in 2009, Kovak developed a robust local fanbase. Additional notice came to the group via their 2012 track "Killer Boots" once Radio 2 began airing it. An acoustic rendition of Sia's "Chandelier" achieved 100,000 YouTube views within the initial eight weeks of its posting in 2014. Kovak's second studio album, Modern Lovers, arrived in 2015 under the production guidance of Dom Beken, known for work with the Orb and High Frequency Bandwidth.
