Singer/songwriter Kristian Hoffman first gained notice in the late '70s as frontman of the cult New York City band the Mumps while also participating in the No Wave scene alongside Lydia Lunch and the Contortions. Through his involvement with Bleaker St. Incident he helped launch the "anti-folk" movement, and he subsequently joined Kid Congo Powers in Congo Norvell. During the '90s Hoffman began appearing consistently under his own name; his debut album I Don't Love My Guru Anymore appeared in 1993, with Earthquake Weather arriving four years afterward. Throughout the rest of the decade he collaborated on multiple projects with Dave Davies and El Vez and additionally acted as music director for Ann Magnuson and Rufus Wainwright. In 2002 he partnered with producer Earle Mankey to create the intimate third album The Song.
