Biography
Estonian pianist Kristjan Randalu moves fluidly between jazz and classical realms, shaping a contemporary voice shaped equally by Erkki-Sven Tüür and Tõnu Kõrvits alongside leading figures in jazz piano.
Born to two classical pianists in Tallinn in 1978, he relocated with his family to Germany at age nine and established a home in Karlsruhe. After an upbringing centered on classical repertoire, he encountered rock, pop, and jazz during his teenage years. He first trained at the local music school, then continued at the University of Music Stuttgart, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Manhattan School of Music. His earliest recording credit came in 2002 as a participant on Estonian singer Siiri Sisask’s album Jälg. Randalu issued his own debut, Confidance, in 2004 via Finetone and assembled his initial quartet the next year to record Tidbits. A Grammy nomination arrived in 2006 for his contributions to the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra & Big Band’s album Elevation. Subsequent releases included Desde Manhattan in 2009, Enter Denter with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra in 2010, and the 2012 duo project Equilibrium with American guitarist Ben Monder on Fresh Sound New Talent.
Following two decades abroad, Randalu returned to Estonia and set up residence with his partner, splitting time between Tallinn and a remote woodland house. Beyond his own projects he contributed as a sideman to recordings by Dhafer Youssef, Matteo Sabattini, and Hedvig Hanson while sharing stages with jazz figures such as Dave Liebman, Ari Hoenig, Eivind Aarset, Mark Guiliana, Nils Petter Molvær, and Nguyên Lê. His first ECM appearance, the 2018 album Absence, reunited him with Monder and introduced Finnish drummer Markku Ounaskari. Irrationalities followed in 2019, documenting his trio alongside bassist Petros Klampanis and drummer Bodek Janke.
