Born in New Orleans, indie pop singer, songwriter, and guitarist Kurt Hagardorn spent his formative years there before relocating to Tennessee. As a teenager in that state he assembled Brian and the Nightmares, a group that toured the South and Midwest throughout the latter half of the 1980s. During the 1990s he joined forces with Gary Miller to launch Gumption, and the duo settled in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1994. The band issued a single and an EP before disbanding. Hagardorn then worked as a session guitarist, supporting country acts Thad Cockrell and Caitlan Cary while developing his own material. Recording stretched from 2000 to 2006, overlapping with yet another move, this time to Portland, Oregon. Bladen County Records, based in Portland, ultimately issued his debut solo album, Ten Singles, on July 24, 2007.
