Blending introspective traditions of confessional songwriting with melodic hooks and a taste for storytelling and sharp wordplay, Kyle Davis works as a modern singer-songwriter. Born in Hopewell, Virginia, he first took up guitar during his teenage years. While attending college he began earning money as a performer throughout the state. After cultivating a dedicated regional audience he cut his debut for the independent Cellar Door Records imprint based nearby. Don Dixon heard the album and volunteered to helm the follow-up, Waiting for You. Issued by the independent Windmark Records, that record moved an unexpected 10,000 copies across Virginia and adjacent states, which in turn secured opening slots alongside Bob Dylan, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, and Blues Traveler. The strong regional sales also earned Davis a place on Billboard’s 1995 list of top unsigned acts.

Soon afterward a demo reached veteran producer Phil Ramone, who was then starting his own imprint, N2K Encoded Music, and decided to sign the songwriter. Davis’s debut for the label, Raising Heroes, arrived in 1998 with Dixon producing and Ramone serving as executive producer. Seeking a richer sonic palette, Dixon recruited seasoned players such as Peter Holsapple and Jim Brock. In fall 2000 the album Don’t Tell the World appeared.
