Biography
Mexican pop/rock duo Lu came into being in 1996 when vocalist Paty Cantu joined forces with guitarist and vocalist Mario Sandoval, both natives of Guadalajara. Sandoval’s upbringing took place in a home filled with music because his father performed as a guitarist and singer. During childhood he acquired guitar and piano skills on his own, joined multiple rock ensembles, and began composing original material. Cantu studied guitar and bass before focusing her efforts on vocals. While still attending school, Cantu and Sandoval shared membership in a musical ensemble where they recognized their shared musical instincts and tastes. They adopted the name Lu, drawn from the opening letters of the Spanish word for moon. In 1999 the pair forwarded a demo containing one of Sandoval’s original songs to Warner Music Mexico. The label responded favorably to Cantu’s commanding vocal presence and Sandoval’s inventive songwriting approach. Their debut album, titled Lu, appeared in 2003. The track “Por Besarte” served as the theme for the telenovela Rebelde and later reached number ten on Billboard’s Latin pop chart. Follow-up single “Una Confusion” brought widespread attention across Mexico and throughout Latin America. They issued Album in 2006, after which sales and public recognition kept rising. Continued radio success with songs such as “La Vida Despues de Ti” has solidified Lu’s standing as a favorite among Latin American youth.
