Biography
Despite its name, L.A. Mix is a British outfit whose initials stand for Les Adams, the act’s frontman, longtime disco mixer and club DJ, together with his wife and production partner Emma Freilich. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the duo issued pop-house singles such as “Check This Out,” which reached number 6 on the UK chart, and “Get Loose,” a hit that arrived after Stock, Aitken and Waterman had declared the pair “unlikely to score another hit.” Detractors existed, yet Adams maintained: “We never said we set out to break new ground or deliver a message. We just want to make dance records that people will enjoy and buy.” Already in 1988 he had guided Maurice Joshua’s “This Is Acid” to the summit of the US club charts. Later releases including “Love Together,” “Coming Back For More” and “Mysteries” fared far less well on the charts. The duo’s 1991 album for A&M Records mixed vintage British soul-dance styles, featuring Juliet Roberts on “All Mine” and Beverley Brown on “Mysteries Of Love.” Another regular vocalist, Jazzie P, later pursued a solo career on the same label. Adams remained active as a producer, among other projects delivering “Baby Love” for Dannii Minogue.
