Biography
La Rue Kétanou formed as a French ensemble whose sound fuses chanson française with reggae, Gypsy traditions, theater, and performance art. The lineup features Florent Vintrigner on accordion and vocals alongside guitarists Olivier Leite and Mourad Musset. The three musicians first connected through Théâtre du Fil, a grassroots arts venue on the edge of Paris, before stepping out as street buskers—an experience that directly inspired their name, roughly meaning “the street that belongs to us.” Momentum arrived after Bibou from the reggae outfit Tryo took an interest, bringing the group along as support on tour dates that included shows at L’Olympia. That exposure led Sony Music’s affiliated imprint Yelen Musiques to sign them, resulting in the 2001 full-length debut En Attendant les Caravanes. Their follow-up, Y’a des Cigales dans la Fourmilière, arrived in 2002 and climbed to number 32 on the French albums chart while fueling a widespread concert run. The 2004 live set Ouvert à Double Tour documented their relentless road schedule and peaked at number 22. After a five-year break for individual pursuits, the band resurfaced with the 2009 studio album À Contresens, which became their highest-charting release at number 12 and prompted an extensive French tour.
