Laird Jackson, a jazz chanteuse recognized for her distinctive interpretations of pop and jazz standards, has also composed original material to complement her celebrated covers. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she spent her early years near Detroit and remained in Michigan through college graduation. She then relocated to New York City, where she began performing on the club circuit. Her intense stage presence quickly built a local following, prompting her to record and issue Quiet Flame in 1994. The album fused 1930s and 1940s jazz standards with her own compositions, attracting notice and leading to a brief engagement with the European jazz scene during its promotion. Over the ensuing eight years she assembled her next project while sustaining live work and attending to private matters. By spring 2002 the singer was prepared to record again, resulting in Touched, which incorporated numerous self-penned songs alongside covers of Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and others.
